The local Philippine community this week mourned the sudden passing of Antonio C. Modena, the country's ambassador to Israel.
Modena, 58, died in Manila last Saturday. The official cause of death has not been released, embassy officials said.
A former journalist who joined the foreign service in 1983, Modena was known for his work on behalf of the foreign workers' community in Israel. "He really focused the embassy on work to assist Filipinos here," Gilberto Asuque, the embassy's charge d'affaires said this week. "If he heard of a Filipino in distress of any nature, he would act immediately. That is the model the ambassador set forth." "The ambassador reached out to the Philippine community, got to know them and the difficulties they face," Asuque said. About 30,000 Filipinos reside in Israel.
