Zvi Bar'el writes for Ha'aretz.
In an August 1993 article in the New York Review of Books, Amos Elon described a visit to Yasser Arafat's headquarters in Tunis in which Bar'el, who was at that time a deputy editor of Ha'aretz, participated. According to Elon, at one point in the visit, when Arafat was complaining about the harshness of the Israeli occupation regime, Bar'el interjected to remark that "Yes, but it forges you as a nation".
Bar'el, who joined Haaretz in 1982 as the territories reporter, was Washington correspondent in the mid-80s and managing editor of the paper from 1989-1994. He is a member of the Haaretz editorial board, and is currently (early 2004) doing a PhD on "Globalization in the Middle East" at Ben-Gurion University.
