The Israel Oriental Society was founded in 1949 by professors affiliated with the School of Oriental Studies (now the Institute of Asian and African Studies) at the Hebrew University. The society is now known as the Middle East and Islamic Studies Association of Israel.

Among the main founders of the society were Professors L. A. Mayer, S. D. Goitein, D. H. Baneth, Dr. H. Z. Hirschberg, Dr. L. Kopf, Mr. Uri Ben-Horin and Dr. J. M. Landau.
