Private William O'Brien (c. 1961-1986) from Athlone ... On 6th December 1986 he was killed by gunfire in Lebanon while serving in UNIFIL, when the checkpoint at Brashit came under fire from the Israeli-backed militia known as the South Lebanon Army. A contemporary report said that he was the 20th Irish soldier to die since Irish troops had gone to Lebanon as part of UNIFIL in 1978.
