Simha Flapan (1911-1987) emigrated from Poland to Palestine in the 1930s. An Israeli historian and politician, he was probably best known for his book The Birth of Israel: Myths And Realities, which was published in the year of his death. Flapan was National Secretary of the left Zionist Mapam party, and the director of its Arab Affairs department. He was the founder and former editor in chief of the Middle East monthly, New Outlook.
