Event #351 Israeli invasion of southern Gaza Strip ("Operation Rainbow") Start Date: Thursday, 13 May 2004 End Date: Monday, 24 May 2004
Israel, wanting to widen the "cordon sanitaire" (the so-called "Philadelphi Route") it had created along the Egyptian border, from about 250 metres wide to about 500 metres, launched a highly destructive operation in the southern Gaza Strip, which was finally ended due to international pressure.
During the operation,
Israel invaded Rafah refugee camp
and
ten people died when Israeli tanks fired on a peaceful protest in Rafah.
