Event #4034 Jewish Agency liaison Eliahu Elath talks with editorial board of New York Times
Date: Friday, 5 Mar 1948
On March 5, 1948, Jewish Agency liaison Eliahu Elath talked with the editorial board at The New York Times. James Reston of the board said that a proclamation of independence would bring forth additional bloodshed to the area. Publisher Arthur Hays Sulzberger disputed Reston’s remarks while complaining that The New York Times was being boycotted by American Zionists. Elath retorted by claiming that the anti-Zionist articles published in The Times harmed the Yishuv and the cause of Jewish independence.
