Event #419 Mahmoud Abbas wins PA presidential election
Date: Sunday, 9 Jan 2005
At various times (some candidates withdrew before election day) the candidates included:
Mahmoud Abbas
Marwan Barghouti
Mustafa Barghouti
Abdel Sattar Qassem
Bassam Salhi
Tayssir Khaled
Abdel Karim Shbier
Hassan Khreisheh
Abdel Halim al-Ashqar
Alsaied Barakh

On the final day of the campaign, the candidates were:

Mahmoud Abbas

Popularly known as Abu Mazen. A recent poll put his support at 65%.

He is a 69-year-old moderate who carries the hopes of the United States and Britain that he will curb the Islamist militant groups and negotiate a peace deal. He is opposed to the use of violence in the Palestinian uprising. However, he lacks charisma and may turn out to be only a transitional leader.

Mustafa Barghouti

An academic and human rights campaigner, standing as an independent. He says the Palestinians need an alternative to Fatah - the dominant Palestinian faction which is headed by Mr Abbas - and Hamas. He is a distant relative of Marwan Barghouti, who is in an Israeli jail.

Aged 50, Mustafa Barghouti is a moderate, opposed to violence, though his election statements have been ambiguous. Opinion polls show his support running at about 22%. He could emerge as the leader of the democratic opposition in the West Bank and Gaza, or could opt for a position in Mr Abbas's cabinet.

Tayseer Khaled

Aged 69, founding member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, one of the most leftwing parties on the slate. Released from an Israeli jail a year ago.

Sayyed Hussein Barakeh

Aged 48, an Islamist academic and businessman, who was deported by Israel to Lebanon in 1989, returning from exile in 1998.

Abdel Kareem Shbair

Aged 54, a lawyer based in Gaza, whose main campaign issue is the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

Bassam al-Salhi

Aged 44, candidate of the People's Party of Palestine (communist), favours civil resistance to violence.

Abdel Halim al-Ashkar

Aged 46, a professor held in the US, awaiting trial, accused of helping to channel funds to militants.
